Campfire safety

A campfire can be a fun part of any outdoor gathering, but it must always be handled responsibly. Before lighting a fire, check local rules and weather conditions. Do not burn during dry, windy, or restricted conditions.

Build campfires only in a designated fire ring or a cleared area away from homes, trees, brush, tents, vehicles, and other flammable materials. Keep the fire small and never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or other flammable liquids to start or restart it.

Always keep water, a shovel, or a fire extinguisher nearby. An adult should supervise the campfire at all times—never leave it unattended, even for a moment. Keep children and pets a safe distance away, and avoid throwing trash, aerosol cans, glass, or treated wood into the flames.

When you are finished, fully extinguish the fire. Slowly pour water over the ashes, stir them with a shovel, and add more water until everything is cool to the touch. If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave.
